Canggu is the first real quiet beachside town north of Kuta which has not yet suffered much development from the tourist industry. Situated just half an hour's drive from Kuta and a further ten minutes from the international airport, Canggu is close to the tourist centre of Bali and all its facilities and yet it feels like you could be a hundred miles away in terms of the un-spoilt countryside and the preserved status of its Balinese culture. There are no clubs in this area and the only real bars are located at the main surfing beach which has become commonly known as 'Echo Beach' due to the name of one of the beachside cafes located there. There are a growing number of tourist facilities such as restaurants, bars and villas but this area remains relatively untouched and is therefore perfect for people seeking a more secluded and cultural seaside area which is still within quick and easy driving distance of the Kuta district, especially the likes of Seminyak which is the most sophisticated and refined area within the region. Padi fields and tropical countryside surround the area and real Balinese scenes of rice farming and Indonesian country life area visible everyday. The beach can be occupied by surfers when the conditions are right as there are left and right beach breaks and a left and a right-hander reef breaks although Canggu is not considered a suitable place to learn to surf. The beach runs down to a point and only a three minute walk leaves the surfers behind and all other tourists leaving total seclusion except the occasional local fisherman. This is a quality that is impossible to find any further south the Canggu. Dinning in Canggu is good with seaside Jimbaran style seafood and other meats barbequed every night and a variety of small cafes on the beach with have lively jolly feel whist maintaining a relaxing atmosphere. There are also a number of many local food joints some of which are of a very high standards an some not so good but the staff at your resort will be more than happy to point you in the direction of the best places to sample their beloved cuisine. Failing these close by options a fifteen minutes drive to Seminyak will prove some of Bali's classiest and best quality dinning. Form those who know about and seek such a sanctuary as Canggu the best of both worlds can be enjoyed as Seminyak has a very touristy and busy feel. Canggu is has few hotels and private villas to choose from within a range of budget to top end luxury so this country life can be enjoyed without sacrificing the kind of luxuries available in other areas of Bali.
