Medewi is located in the far north of the west coast and is around a three hour drive from Kuta depending on traffic. Medewi is mainly famed for its long left hand point break. This wave is very mellow but can still get fairly large and powerful in the right conditions, it has been described by many as a left hand version of Malibu in Hawaii and most of the time it is suitable for beginners who have already learnt the basics, long boarding and is fun for carving and playing around on, on a short board. However as it is so far away from the heart of the surfing action it has a totally different feel as a location and is a real secluded coastal spot where the surrounding land is totally undeveloped. From here you can see the mountain ranges of Bali up close and also across the water you can the mountains of Java where every evening the sun will sit before disappearing below the mountains creating amazing sunsets.

The beauty of Medewi is in its simplicity, there are a few traditional style huts, some of which have air conditioning and a few decent places to get traditional and western food but really there is not much else here. The locals are invariable friendly and the surfers wake up at first light, surf then sleep at around nine to ten o'clock. If you are not in Medewi to sure then it is lovely place to be based to look round the whole North West region of the island of Bali. It is close to the harbor to Java is you wished to make a short trip over into Java and it is perfect for navigating the national conservational parks or even looking at the north coast. Just a small walk from the surf break leads you into traditional fishing beaches where that look exactly the same as they must have looked 100 or even 200 years ago with the local fishers employing the same techniques.

Other nearby places of interest are Balian which is a similar place with a heavier wave that can get really big and an interesting wide river mouth that is excellent for fishing and walking although rumor has it there are a few sharks that like to reside in this area when the river flow is strong in the wet season and the fish are plentiful.

Medewi is not a surf spot similar to the spots in the south of the island but it is a good spot for intermediates or anyone who would like a change, its ideal for long board surfing and aside from surfing it is a lovely place that has not been developed in the same way as the southern areas and if you are interested in seeing this area or you wish to go round the perimeter then Medewi is an excellent place to make a stay or be based. Friendly locals, cheap prices, decent accommodation although the nearest cash point is a half hour drive away which may be worth bearing in mind.
