BALI SURFING

Surfing in Bali is said to have began at some time around 1970 although it is likely a lucky few were surfing the island to there selves some years before then. Bali in many peoples opinion is a surfing theme park with so many different waves on a relatively small island for all abilities and all year round consistency. The most consistent time of the year for decent swell is from July through to October which is the middle of the dry season and also the most popular time to visit the island and therefore the most crowded. When turning up to Bali it may be easiest to go for your first dip on Kuta beach, there are a variety of semi permanent sand bars that create peaks from the airport right the way up to the top of Seminyak. Here the size tends to increase the further north you travel so if the swell is low try Seminyak, if it is high then try right down by McDonalds although on a very large swell an be dangerous here. If you are learning not yet an expert then this can be a good place to surf, sometimes conditions can be classic although as with most long beach breaks many waves close out.

So what about the Famous Bukit (meaning hill) located at the south of Bali? Well starting from Uluwatu there are a number of breaks all of which are left handlers including Impossible, Binging, Padang Padang, dreamlands and Balangan, all of which are more serious waves break onto reefs except dreamlands that is mainly reef with a beach inside section. Uluwatu has three breaks named 'Outside corner' which is actually closest to the point and only really breaks when the swell is 8ft or over and can be awesome, 'The Peak' that is actually a few peaks and work all the way through the tides and 'The Racetracks' which true to its name is a very fast barreling wave that breaks into very shallow water especially at low tide when the wave can be unreal. Balangan is usually smaller than the other waves although it is very fast and give you a hell of a ride and Padang Padang works only on very big swell and has been named Indonesian Pipeline, this wave is world class and very dangerous due to the thickness and power of the wave and the shallowness of the water combined with the proximity to the cliffs. A ledgey take of is followed by a bottom turn from hell and then pull into a massive barrel and hope to make it out, its sucky and has a nasty pinch but if you make it the water goes deep and ul be safe (unless of course you want to go again!)

There are plenty of waves on the east side of Bali that are brilliant off season for surfing when the wind goes the other way and Nusa Lembongan is home to three awesome breaks one which is named Lacerations and is one of the worlds best stand up barrel right handers that required a similar swell to Pandang Padang. Surfing in Bali can be a memorable experience for each of surfer. Explore the island and find your best Bali surfing spots. Last but not least surfing in Bali will add your experience for life. Go surfing in Bali !
