GIANYAR REGENCY

Cheap accommodation in Kuta ranges in style

Gianyar is a district within the east of Bali and is home to the largest population of residents of all the remaining 9 districts. It is likely that if you are traveling around Bali that you will pass through Gianyar at some point. Gianyar is just south of Ubud an north of Sanur and extends from the hills that lead up to Ubud with their hillside villages, tropical woodlands, rice paddies and valleys, all the way over to the volcanic black sand beaches and eastern fishing villages. There is not actually a great deal to see in terms of tourist attractions, which is actually the best thing about the area. The relatively recent building of the By-pass road and the other new roads that have opened up the area have made it even easier to travel to what is often referred to as ‘the real Bali’ as in this area the culture and lifestyle is still strong but in contrast to areas such as Ubud, there only a tiny tourism industry with the exceptions of a few areas meaning here people are genuinely living the way they always have rather than putting o a show for the tourists.

The black sand beaches have excellent views of Bali as you can usually see Nusa Lembongan located just offshore and on a clear day you can see it very clearly as well as the south of the island and the mountains and volcanoes of the north. Some of the beaches can get surf in large swells and there are a few reefs although unless you know what you are looking for there is far better surf further south on the island. the beaches almost always are without a single person other then locals collecting salt and seafood at low tide.

The main town of Gianyar is fairly small and again has no real attractions other than its cultural charm, there is a large statue of Arjuna and Krishna upon a three-horse chariot in the center and there is an excellent market where jewelry and cloths can be bought at very low prices. Gianyar is also famous for its supreme quality of Babi Guling, which is the Balinese spit roasted suckling pig cooked in spices and is considered a dish for occasions.

In the hills of Gianyar there are a small number of traditional bungalow resorts that have been built in the Ubud style and offer similar views over rice paddies, tropical woodlands and valleys and are priced considerably lower then resorts of the same quality in Ubud. Gianyar is also far far less populated by tourists and in the quite tropical countryside these are perfect locations for a couple to spend a few days in luxury and tranquility away from the tourists. Mas and Ubud are considered areas within the Gianyar district and offer a similar seen to the northern hills of Gianyar although the tourism population is booming in these parts and although it is still easy to get secluded villas outside the main town and watch the cultural performances, the feel is different. On the plus side there are far more facilities and things to do and the area has retained its traditional charm although in some places you have to look through the tourism glaze to see it.
