SEMINYAK Towards the northern side of Kuta is Seminyak, the up market and much more refined area of the Kuta district. Here the beach has a more laid back and home to more of a family and couples cliental. However Seminyak is in no way dull with many bars and restaurants creating a more sophisticated scene, no big cheesy clubs here but instead a selection of smaller intimate open front bars offering world music and a more distinguished atmosphere with service that is exuberant delicate and refined. Here accommodation is commonly of the mid to top end range and although pricing is definitely extremely reasonable for the standard of tourist facilities in this area it is obviously not the bargain basement of south Kuta.The layout of Seminyak is similar to that of northern Legian in the south and changes into more of a tropical country scene in the north as Seminyak merges into Kerobokan. Accommodation in the South of Seminyak is typically a selection of large very well established resorts offering luxury trimmings with luscious spas, pools and overall grandeur. Many of these are located on the seafront with sunset views extending over silhouetted palms and the lapping waves of the Indian Ocean with private beach access. As you head further north there are more villa set ups, these private bungalows are usually separately spaced within a beautifully kept central garden area with pools, courtyards and buildings often of palace like grandeur. Many bungalow villas are traditional in style with thatched roofs, private gardens and pools often with sea or rice padi views. These villas are usually spaced within gorgeous landscapes and close the main strip of Jalan Abimanyu Seminyak but just off a subsidiary area of equal dinning standard in a more secluded environment. The traditional style villas have a very authentic and serine feel, the villa interiors are usually very modern luxury retreats, cozy with home comforts presented with an eastern approach, this style has become world famous as the Bali style villa and has been imitated the world over. Activity wise swimming, surfing and sunbathing are popular on the beach although there are a multitude of beach sports such as beach football, volleyball and beach tennis that take place throughout the day. On the whole the beach is large expanse of white sands with far crowds people than in central Kuta and a total absence of partiers and young drinkers. When entering the sea for surfing or swimming it is important to be sensible with regards to the conditions, big swells can be very dangerous here and create strong currents that are usually fairly well marked by red flags. Seemingly obvious but many people fall victim to the these waters and are almost always intoxicated or trying to swim or surf in conditions outside their ability. There is a good peak close to Dyana Pura that picks up a lot of swell, you can find a playful wave here when central Kuta is completely flat and even on a small swell there can be large waves. If the waves look a little too big as they often can be, then head further south along the beach where they will be smaller and smaller. The beach has plenty of facilities in terms of surfboard rental, hot and cold drinks, food stalls, sarong and carving stalls and good toilet and changing facilities. In total young and more mature couples will find Seminyak a peaceful retreat with very good shopping, eating and drinking locally. Within the Kuta district it is surprising how much more refined Seminyak is and also how close it is to Kuta and therefore the airport, the capital of Denparsar, Jimbaran and Sanur etc. Seminyak is also a very family friendly and more appropriate then central Kuta for young children to enjoy.
