TABANAN REGENCY

Tabanan can be considered as two regions, the hills leading up to the mountains, and the flat plains below in the south of the area. Tabanan is one of the main administrative centers for the production and shipping of rice although the main town area is very small. The Tabanan Kingdom is ancient with an excellent museum called the Subak Museum that is among the areas main attractions. The area is beautiful and coming up from the south west of the island it is the first opportunity you will come across to stretch your eyes over a true classic panoramic Indonesian scene of flat rolling plains of rice paddies with the stunning hills and mountains in the background. The best way to set out for this is to head north along Jalan Legian, which turns into Jalan Raya Kerobokan without turning and then at the top of the road go left into the open views, these are great roads to go for a drive, walk or cycle ride and when you return to the very head of Jalan Raya Kerobokan there is a fantastic Indonesian restaurant called Warung Murni that serves a very high standard of Indonesian cosine at reasonable prices in separate gazebos within a garden.

Tabanan is located just thirty minutes drive from the tourist center of Kuta and is still close to the west coast for trips to the beach. But the main reason to stay in Tabanan is to escape the tourist areas and live in the Balinese tropical harmony of the sweet unchanged village surrounded by rice paddies and gorgeous tropical woodlands. Here you can see the native monkeys who have become tame and inquisitive of the humans in the villages and other sights such as the giant bats and nearby mother temple which is of great significance to every one the island and is the most photographed spot in Bali, named Tanah Lot. Tabanan really is a different area to anywhere in the touristy south, even around Canggu which is also far quieter than Kuta there still is a lot of traffic and built up areas, Tabanan is one of the first true unchanged spots from the south where you really can relax in the beauty and tranquility of the real Bali that first attracted people to this magnificent island and best of all if you do feel like going for a night out in Seminyak or making use of the facilities of Kuta then the drive is only short to come back into the main tourist areas.

There are also a whole length of beaches that stretch up the east coast from this area are wonderful for a walk as there are never any people around. The sands are black and the sea is often dangerous for swimming in these areas do to strange currents and stormy crashing waves but the atmosphere is incredible and views sensational with completely natural landscapes as far as the eye can see.

Tabanan also extends up to the lakes such as Bedugul in the highlands where you will need to take warm clothes to enjoy the serine peace of the area.
