Travel Around Bali
Traveling around Bali is extremely easy and often very enjoyable
Traveling around Bali is extremely easy and often very enjoyable. There are a few different methods to go for most of which are inexpensive and offer different experiences from private luxury to super cheap cultural experiences. As Bali is essentially a small island with the main areas of interest all located in the southern area within 30 minutes of each other with bypass style roads, traveling is effortless. If you desire to go a little further
a field and experience a more traditional and cultural side of Bali then you may wish to put a little more thought into how to get around.
Many people hire their own transport from 125cc motor bikes to varying sizes jeep style vehicles. It is possible to hire a newish motorbike in decent condition for around $20 a week although it is likely many places will try to charge you a lot more. As for cars there are 2 seat Suzuki vehicles that are popular and larger 5 seat family vehicles that can be rented for under $5 to $10 per day and often are equipped with air conditioning and electric windows. It is usual to get large discounts when booking longer periods of time and is often best to hire for the entire duration of your trip if you feel you will be using it on most days. One off hire can also be arranged easily at many places and it is not expensive to arrange a chartered driver to take you where you wish to go. Although this may cost a little more, local knowledge should never be underestimated.
A number of companies run air conditioned buses which are useful for longer journeys although they can quite expensive (in comparison to other methods). There are also the
'bemos' that are green mini buses that are similar to although slightly larger than Thailand's tut tuts, these are extremely cheap and tend to drive a circuit that is subject to detours should people ask for close by areas and pay a little more. This method is extremely cheap and costs well under a dollar for the fixed price regardless of the distance traveled. Really this method should never cost more than 5000Rp (which is a generous price) though Bemo drivers are notorious for overcharging tourists, stick to your guns and drive a hard barter.
The Bluebird taxi service is Indonesia wide and is generally honest and reliable, journeys on the meter usually cost around $2.50 for a 4-5 km journey. There are many
'unofficial' taxi services who are usually fairly inconspicuous and may be seen sitting on a wall suggesting
'transport?' These are probably best avoided as they will offer the same service but push for money where as the Bluebird service is professional.
There are a number places where limos, and other more specialized vehicles can hired including larger more luxury cars and customized vehicles. Although more expensive, as with most things in Bali what ever level of service you wish to get it will usually come at an excellent price if you go to a legitimate company and especially if you don't mind trying your hand at the Indonesian custom of bartering.
